While searching for the best columbaria layout, we wanted to restore the central composition of the cemetery. We proposed a new ending of the main axis leading from the entrance gate to the hall of the unrealized cemetery chapel. In its place, we designed a cemetery square ending the main compositional axis. This square may become a place of future funeral ceremonies and an ecumenical concentration space for the entire cemetery. The remaining axes are ended with smaller squares, open to the cemetery space. The composition is complemented by fields of greenery surrounding the rectangular columbaria blocks.
The design proposes a commemoration space in contact with nature, evoking a mood of contemplation and reflection. For this purpose, the burial program (2,000 niches) was divided into smaller cemetery chambers creating intimate spaces, making it easier to focus and easily find the ashes of a loved one. The existing cold store building has been integrated into the columbarium composition and, like them, covered with local stone.
